Regenerating Landscapes for a Healthy Future

Australia is home to some of the most unique and biologically diverse plant ecosystems in the world. From alpine forests and coastal heathlands to tropical rainforests, arid shrublands and endangered Grassy Box Woodlands, each ecosystem supports an extraordinary diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms that interact in complex and fascinating ways.

This unit provides students with opportunities to investigate Australia’s plant ecosystems through scientific inquiry, field investigations and hands-on learning experiences. Students explore the relationships between living and non-living components of ecosystems, examine the importance of biodiversity, and investigate how nutrient, water and energy cycles sustain healthy environments.

Throughout the unit, students develop an understanding of ecological relationships, adaptations and habitat requirements while investigating the environmental challenges facing Australia’s native ecosystems. A particular focus is placed on Grassy Box Woodlands, one of Australia’s most endangered ecological communities, providing students with opportunities to examine the causes of habitat loss and the importance of conservation and restoration.

Building on this ecological knowledge, students explore the principles of regenerative agriculture and investigate how land management practices can improve soil health, increase biodiversity, restore ecosystem function and support sustainable food production. Students apply their understanding by designing resilient landscapes that balance agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship.

The unit concludes by encouraging students to recognise their role as environmental stewards and to investigate how individuals, schools, communities and landholders can work together to protect and restore Australia’s natural landscapes for future generations. Through observation, collaboration, scientific investigation and critical thinking, students develop a deeper appreciation of Australia’s natural environment while gaining the knowledge and skills needed to contribute positively to healthy, resilient landscapes.
