STAGE 1

Grassy Box Woodland
Discovering Nature’s Neighbours

This unit introduces students to the living and non-living components of a Grassy Box Woodland ecosystem through hands-on exploration, sensory learning and inquiry-based investigations. Students develop an appreciation of the plants, animals, soils and habitats found within their local environment and begin to understand that all living things have needs that must be met in order to survive.

Through observation, play-based learning and scientific investigations, students explore biodiversity, habitats, healthy soil, native wildlife and the importance of caring for the environment. Students are encouraged to recognise how humans are connected to nature and how their actions can help protect and improve local environments.

Aboriginal perspectives are embedded throughout the unit, introducing students to the concept of Caring for Country and the understanding that people, plants, animals and places are all connected. Students are encouraged to develop a sense of wonder, responsibility and appreciation for the natural world and begin to understand how healthy environments support healthy communities.

The concept is so compatible with Australian culture it’s hard not to get involved! By becoming a TRLA member, you’ll be supporting our work, learning new skills, becoming part of the solution, and helping to make a difference for the future.
